When I first received How to Roast a Lamb in the mail, I was instantly impressed and I hadn't even cracked open the book. Magnificently large, with a smooth cover photo that invites the reader in, I was instantly looking forward to what I might find inside.
Eleven chapters of recipes, techniques, personal memories, plus black and white and color photos graced the pages of this cookbook. What I like most about How to Roast a Lamb is that it appeals to a wide range of home cooks from the mildly experienced to the very experienced home chef. Many of Michael's recipes are straightforward and quite doable with minimal ingredients and average prep and cooking times while some of his recipes are more complicated and require time, a strong cooking background and lots of ingredients. But for anyone who enjoys cooking for family and friends, the broad range of authentically Greek recipes, techiniques and ingredients is very appealing.
In addition to recipes and bold, beautiful photos, Michael also provides highly readable and enjoyable stories about his family, his upbrining, his Greek culture, and his love of Greek cuisine, making this cookbook a touching memoir as well as a cookbook, which I found quite appealing.
How to Roast a Lamb is a fabulous cookbook for the Greek food enthusiast and anyone interested in learning how to cook it and I think it would be the perfect gift for those who enjoy not only cooking but reading their cookbooks from cover to cover.
